Outage safety
- Downed lines
Stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from fallen wires and anything touching them. Call 911, then your utility.
- Generators outside only
Run generators at least 6 metres from doors and windows – never in a garage. Carbon monoxide is invisible and deadly.
- CO alarms
Keep battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms on every floor. If one sounds, get outside and call 911.
- Food safety
Keep fridge and freezer closed: food stays cold about 4 hours in the fridge and up to 48 hours in a full freezer.
- Unplug electronics
Unplug appliances to avoid damage from surges when power returns. Leave one light on so you know.
- Heat & cold
Dial 211 (where available) for the nearest cooling or warming centre. Never heat your home with an oven, grill or camp stove.
- Medical devices
If you rely on powered medical equipment, tell your utility, ask about priority notification programs, and have a backup plan.
- Dark traffic lights
Treat an intersection with dark signals as an all-way stop.
